“For their 2013 client holiday gift, Goods & Services and Flash Reproductions decided to make the season a little sweeter by treating recipients to a flight of three different grades of maple syrup.

Following their mandate of giving handcrafted products from local producers, Goods & Services sourced the syrup from Matthews Maple Syrup, a family-owned farm in Powassan, Ontario. Ranging from light to medium to amber, each of the syrups was custom bottled and labelled with names that reflect an aspect of Canadiana: light like the song of a voyageur (light), smooth like the shot of a hockey player (medium), and strong like the arms of a lumberjack (amber).”

“Continuing the theme of Canadiana, all three syrups are nestled inside a bright red, specially designed box, with a subtle pattern of iconic images from a Canadian winter, as well as an homage to maple syrup, written in the style of Canada’s national anthem.

Thanks to precision measurement and cutting techniques, each bottle sits snugly inside its own slot in the custom-made box, held in place by the box’s label.”

“For its 2012 holiday gift, branding firm Up Inc sent clients a handcrafted bottle of traditional-method sparkling wine. And, since printing on glass was a novel experiment, two custom packages were created—each featuring a playful name, festive holiday messaging and light-hearted design.

Bottles were silk-screened with silver-metallic ink (requiring six full days to dry), and protected in paper-wrapped shipping tubes—also designed to accent the contents within. All tubes were sealed with personalized labels, adding a friendly finishing touch.”

“Pearlfisher has created the packaging design and fragrance stories for Crabtree & Evelyn’s new 2012 Christmas Gift collection.

The Christmas Gift Collection comprises of both a Home Fragrance range in two scents: Noel®  and Winter Garden™ (including candle, diffuser and room spray) and a Personal Care range (including shimmering body mist and shimmer lip gloss).

The designs move away from the traditional to offer a new and original take on festive fragrance, telling stories through illustration that bring each fragrance to life – “weaving around fresh balsams and rich persimmons, the arctic fox and nimble deer breathes life into sleeping citrus trees awakening a heady burst of sharp scent”.

Sarah Butler, Deputy Creative Director at Pearlfisher said, “We devised a story for each fragrance and used bespoke illustrations, rich, contrasting colours and nature motifs to bring it to life and take the consumer into a magical and festive world, moving from the traditional and coded to a more contemporary, imaginative and inspirational expression of Christmas.”

“We were commissioned with the task of creating a limited run of holiday gift boxes for Spice Works, a local company we’ve previously worked with. In order to give these already limited-edition packages a little something extra, we developed a production method which allows us to create one-off package designs while retaining the cost and time-effectiveness of medium-run production processes. Customers are encouraged to pick their favourite pattern in order to further enhance the spirit of gift-giving by including them in the final design decisions. We feel that this is a innovative idea in packaging design because even “exclusive” or “limited editions” are never truly unique. Multiple boxes can be purchased for gift-giving without the common “me-too” feeling recipients often get. The various patterns were created with a grid system in order to make the overall product line cohesive. In order to reinforce the idea that the box is not just a package, but a keepsake, the Spice Works logo is subtly located on the reverse of the lid.

Each box is hand-crafted in Baltic birch and contains mini-mold WECK jars filled with Spice Work’s Artichoke Dip Mix and Mango Curry Dip Mix.”

“A custom screen-printed whiskey bottle box with some old western flair was crafted as a personal thank you gift for select clients of the motion graphics company JustinMcClure.tv. A small tag was printed to accompany the whiskey bottle, leaving a place for a handwritten thank you message. All materials were printed by hand using a 305 mesh screen to ensure that all the details came through accurately on both the box and the tag.”

Designed by jkr | Country: United Kingdom

“This week sees the launch of the 2011 Penhaligon’s Christmas Gift Collection, designed by jkr. The range conveys the premium elegance associated with the Penhaligon’s brand whilst playing on its wit and humor. “Our brief to jkr was to create a box that would both charm the customer with some British eccentricity whilst ensuring it felt like a bespoke gift” said Sarah Rotheram, CEO, Penhaligon’s. “The box needed to be a keep sake item with standalone appeal. At first glance the packaging was to appear beautiful but with a reason to look a little closer.”

“We landed on the theme of Hidden London” said Jovan Buac, Account Director, jkr. “This felt rich in creativity and we explored this idea through a number of different avenues. The idea of life behind closed doors in Victorian London allowed us to express the Penhaligon’s wit and eccentricity in an engaging way that came from the brand” added Buac. The range depicts a Victorian household, with three box sizes that stack to create a six story house. “The design delivers the madness one would expect from a bonkers British household, with all the hustle and bustle of life in the decadent surroundings of a Victorian home” said Sarah Rotheram, CEO, Penhaligon’s.

As always, the Penhaligon’s Christmas packaging should have a festive appeal but without direct references to Christmas clichés. “The boxes are a visual treat and take inspiration from Victorian dolls’ houses, as well as Victorian architecture and dress” said Matt Gilpin, Design Director, jkr. “The front of the house is based on the Penhaligon’s shop front in Covent Garden, London, giving the design more depth and meaning. The illustrative style hides a variety of different scenes which leave you constantly searching for more hidden goings on”. The brief also included the structural design, meaning the aesthetic needed to balance with the safe transportation of breakable goods. The historical hat box with carry handle idea was continued this year, with grosgrain two-tone ribbons to match the graphics.

“The boxes needed to look clean and crisp to counteract the detailed illustrations. We used a metallised paper stock with a satin finish, which gave a shimmer to the boxes. The use of punchy colours and heavy gold foiling on the front created a box with real gift appeal” said Judith Allan, Production Director, jkr.

Sarah Rotheram, CEO, Penhaligon’s said “We are delighted with the final collection and personally, I find more hidden stories in the design every time I pick up the packaging!”
